Exchequer Leghorn
Bold in pattern, brilliant in production
There’s something especially exciting about welcoming a brand-new breed into the flock—everything feels fresh and full of possibility. Our Exchequer Leghorns are the newest addition here at Hatch A Batch, and they’ve already made quite the impression.
The Leghorn is well known for being one of the most productive egg-laying breeds in the world, but the Exchequer variety brings a bold, eye-catching twist to that classic reputation. Their crisp black-and-white mottled feathers look almost checkered, giving them a sharp, polished appearance that stands out beautifully against the greens of the yard. No two birds are marked exactly the same, which makes watching them all the more enjoyable.
What I’ve quickly come to appreciate about our Exchequer Leghorns is their energy and alertness. They have that classic Leghorn liveliness—always first to investigate something new, always busy, always on the move. There’s an intelligence behind their bright eyes that I really admire. They keep things interesting, that’s for sure.
And of course, there’s the egg basket. Leghorns are known for their impressive production of bright white eggs, and I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing these girls settle into a steady laying rhythm. It’s such a gift to have a breed that combines beauty with practicality so effortlessly.
As the newest breed here at Hatch A Batch, they represent growth for us—trying something new, expanding our flock thoughtfully, and continuing to fall in love with the incredible variety that exists in the chicken world. I already find myself pausing to watch those bold black-and-white feathers moving across the run, feeling that familiar spark of excitement that comes with every new chapter in this journey.
They may be the latest addition, but I have a feeling the Exchequer Leghorns are going to become a firm favorite around here.
